Parang is a type of indigenous Christmas music with a Latin American Spanish influence, and during the Christmas season this year the parang songs have dominated the airwaves in Grenada, writes Jamaica Gleaner on December 31, 2005. The parang songs have been so popular that they replaced the traditional North American Christmas carols in the airwaves, and this has prompted callers to various radio talk shows to place a ban on some of the offensive parang songs. The Roman Catholic Bishop, Vincent Darius, has also expressed concern over the type of songs being played in Grenada: “Drinking, eating, feting, that's the things Christ is absent. We must become fearful, because we wonder what next will happen,” he says. Grenada – covering an area twice the size of Washington, DC – is one of the smallest independent countries in the Western hemisphere. |
