1990 – 1999

1997. Tabu Lay Rochereau. Democratic Republic of Congo
The album 'Kebo Beat' was banned in the musician's native Democratic Republic of Congo, described as having 'immoral lyrics'. Despite bringing Zairean music to an international audience, Tabu Lay Rochereau was forced to flee the former Zaïre after criticism from the late President Mobutu's regime. He returned in June 1997 after Mobutu is ousted from power.

1997. Mbongeni Ngema. South Africa
The song Ubhuti was banned by all eight African-language radio stations at the South African Broadcasting Corporation: Zulu was considered 'too sensitive a language' to use when speaking overtly about sex.
