1700s. Italy and Europe The Vatican banned public performances of opera, and also banned women from signing in performances. Cardinals who liked opera, such as Pietro Ottoboni, found a way to escape this Vatican decision by writing themselves libretti with sacred text, text from the Bible and from allegorical things.
1700s. Wales Religious leaders in Wales unsuccessfully tried to ban the triple harp. They declared music and dancing evil and, along with long hair, grouped them with murder and cock fighting among the 12 deadliest sins.
