1900 – 1949

1939. USA. Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday crooned against the lynching of black men in the song 'Strange Fruit'. The "strange fruit" of the title are lynched blacks, hanging from trees across the American south. This powerful political song was banned on the American radios. The song was written by the Jewish communist schoolteacher Abel Meeropol. It was first performed by Billie Holiday at New York's radical nightclub Café Society in 1933. Protest songs on behalf of America's blacks were almost unheard of at the time.

1942. USA. James Caesar Perilla
James Caesar Perilla was in a union dispute which imposed his infamous recording ban soon after USA went to war.

1942-1944. USA. Musicians recording ban
In August 1941 the musicians’ union the American Federation of Musicians called a ban on all commercial recordings, as part of a struggle to get royalties from record sales for a union fund for out-of-work musicians. The union, led by trumpeter James Petrillo, had previously opposed the recording of music, or “canned music”. Musicians were replaced with records in radio, and in cafes and bars were bands were replaced with jukeboxes.
