"In Mingora, dozens of local Taliban attacked and ransacked a hotel on Kalam Fizagat Road where people were dancing, and music was going on. They smashed the windowpanes and threatened the owner to close the function, otherwise his hotel would be blown up," writes Shafqat Ali from Islamabad in a report for The Asian Age.

He also reports that Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province is witnessing a fresh wave of threats to video and CD shops. Music CDs and song cassettes are sold for half price in the area at the moment because the shopkeepers plan to switch over to other businesses.

"The Taliban is threatening to resurface and take charge," a senior government official told Shafqat Ali. The local Taliban is constantly mailing threat letters to the owners of music shops and according to the official he interviewed, "the Taliban are so conspicuously doing their job that the recipients of the letters are too scared to defy. The Taliban had a very shaky start in the beginning and their threats went unnoticed, but the recipients are now taking these warnings seriously. As a result, some shopkeepers have started to switch over to other businesses," he said.

The right wing Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal government in North West Frontier Province has already banned music in busses, taxis and other forms of public transport.
