Norway:
Exhibition about freedom of expression

On 25 September 2007, the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo opens the exhibition 'Freedom of Expression – How Free is Free?'. Freemuse has assisted with material and information about musicians who are portrayed in the exhibition.

The Norwegian Nobel Peace Center introduces its audience to persons who have pushed the boundries of the freedom of expression, such as Anna Politkovskaja, Aung San Suu Kyi, and Salman Rushdie, as well as musicians such as Farhad Darya, Gorki Carrasco, Salman Ahmed and Junoon, Kurash Sultan, Lounès Matoub, Marcel Khalife, Marjan and Mahsa Vahdat, and Thomas Mapfumo.

"In the exhibition we meet people that personally have felt the limitations of the freedom of expression", says Director of the Nobel Peace Center, Bente Erichsen.
"Some have critisized regimes, authorities or multinational companies, other have shocked, offended or violated people through their art or by expressing their views. Some have become heros, some have been killed because of it. Being able to express yourself freely and critically is a human right and a corner stone in any democracy. The Nobel Peace Center highlights dilemmas linked to the freedom of expression: How far can people be allowed to push the limits of expression? Should everything be allowed or legal?," she asks.
