Your activities on Music Freedom Day 2008

Rainbow Bridge
We are doing what we can to support your cause. We recently released our song called Banned and a supporting video with stills images that reflect rock censorship and we thought we add a few clips to support the work you do and hopefully draw attention to your cause. Our video did not capture the serious issues you deal with but we took a lighter tone as we felt it was far better to point our friends to your site for further education. We plan on promoting our song and your March 3 event over then next several weeks , and getting out the word to as many people as possible. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=25993306 . We are hoping to write a blog too soon on all that we found during our research, if possible we hope the band can do a show in India supporting your March 3. event. It has been a pleasure meeting you. Peace, Freedom and Respect... =Rainbow Bridge --- Eva

I found out about this day through a project I did in my Law 12 class about three weeks ago. My project was about music censorship. I have to admit that I have not been able to stope researching about the issue. To contribute I plan to coordinate a non-profit event that will be quite costly. My Goal is to grab the attention of those who may not have heard of the issue or thought that it wasn't really an issue. My strategy is to place the event at th Vancouver Art Gallery, B.C. Canada and have several local artist perform. I Am looking for support being only the age of 18 this is my first even ever of this size that I have began coordinating. If there is any support specifically financially please notify me. It would mean the world to accomplish this. I believe it is a huge issue especially originating from a war torn country by the name of Lebanon. Take care and blessings to everyone who is doing something in light of this issue.

Helle Solvang, Danish Broadcasting Corporation
Danish national radio channel P1 will broadcast: 'Sangens ytringsfrihed' ('Freedom of expression in singing'), a programme produced by Helle Solvang, on 18 February 2008 at 11:30 på DR P1. Rebroadcasted at 21:30 same day, and at 05:30 the following day.

Kelvin Sandigo
I am currently researching information for a topic I am presenting in my Theory of Knowledge course. The topic is "The Influence of Music in Relation to Violence, Social Interaction, and Ethics." Ironically enough, my partner and I are scheduled to present on 03 March 2008. We will discuss the direct rational-emotive influences (both positive and negative) music has on people and how national governments manipulate artistic creativity. Although this is mostly done for the betterment and protection of its citizens, there are many cases of how unjustified political vendettas affect legislations on music.

In Balkh Province, Afghanistan, the Afghanistan Culture House Organisation is planning a big event on 3rd of March. We have chosen Balkh, because it is the birth place of the great poet and thinker Rumi, who intruduced music as the sound of the creation of universe. 1000 balloons will fly over Mazar-i-Sharif City to convey the message to the world that Afghans also love music! There will be a press conference, a concert and a general gathering to support music and freedom of expression in Afghanistan as well as in the world.

Jason Hall   jason@jasonjhall.com
I host an international music program on the Western Michigan University student radio station, WIDR - FM . During my March 2nd program, I will be playing selections from many of the artists highlighted throughout this fantastic web site. Podcasts of my program will be available via the program's web site: http://www.jasonjhall.com/widrworld This website and the free music movements are wonderful endeavors, and it rekindles my excitement about international music, and the power that it has to change the world... always for the better... There is no bad music; some music is better than others... but the creative forces within the human spirit are always good forces... sometimes shocking in their attempts to shock... sometimes shockingly annoying to my ears... but it is all good... and the idea that people are censored or jailed or barred from their homes for channeling their lives into song... well, there's two things I have to say about that... 1) the repression from others is a wonderful, driving, creative force, because the music is that much sweeter as forbidden fruit, and has that much more emotion and power behind it. It really has something important to say, and it matters that it be said. 2) When people are exiled from their homes, and find other communities to share, it does provide for a wonderful opportunity for new blends of music to be made. I have long been an advocate for multi-cultural music. When cultures collide, wonderful pieces of art are often created. There are too many to mention, but suffice it to say that I've almost always enjoyed music that crosses national boundaries. Free music is the best kind of music there is.

Matjaž Jaušovec, RockOnNet.com   matjaz.jausovec@rockonnet.com
Slovenian music web-zine RockOnNet will publish the article about Music Freedom Day. We also plan to dedicate whole week to that issue by publishing videos from artist that have dealed with any kind of censorship.

Albert Reguant, Catalunya Radio canal ICATFM
My programme, HIDROGEN, is two hour's every Saturday at 06h - 08h, on the public broadcasting channel of the Catalan government - radio cultural FM & interner ICATFM (www.icatfm.cat ). This week, on HIDROGEN at ICATFM, we will dedicate the second hour to the "international day of censored music". Music Freedom Day is celebrated all over the world this next Monday 3rd March, destined to defend the right of the freedom of speech in the music. For this special program we have made a musical selection of artists of several periods that have suffered or are suffering from censorship. Some have had to exile themselves, or are (or they have been) victims of the silence of the means of information in their respective countries. We will include a variety of songs, lyrics from a number of censored artists – including Pete Seegers album - “Pete”, Edi Niederlandss album - “Reflection from Pre-Liberation South Africa”, Tiken Jah Fakoly’s single - “African Rebel” and various artists on the àlbum - “The Roots of the Narcocorrido”. Lastly we will also draw songs from the much debated Catalunian artist - Raimon - as well as the album 'Hidrogen' – Espais Naturals de Catalunya 1.”

Eric Rodrigue Fabrice Loembet, Congo
The cultural organisation Erwill Promo Entertainment in Congo Brazzaville is celebrating Music Freedom Day with a seminar on Saturday 1 March and a round table on Monday 3 March. The events - “Les mots de la liberté d’expression musicale” – are focusing on freedom of musical expression. Erwill Promo Entertainment has invited a person from the Superior Council of Freedom of Communication, a spokesman from the Censorship board of Congo (BCDA) as well as the artists Hardos Massamba, Lang’l and Cavla. There will be live music as well as debate.

Jason Hall   http://www.jasonjhall.com/widrworld
WIDR World will have a special broadcast that day about musicians whose voices have been challenged over the years (see above), featuring a special interview with Moh Alileche, a North African musician dedicated to the preservation of the Imazighen language and culture. Moh has also been an advocate for the memory of Lounès Matoub, whose voice was silenced by assassins in 1998. Visit the WIDR World Website for more info, podcasts, etc...

Playlist: From Albion And Beyond KUAR FM89, 8-9pm 3/5/08: ... Marjan Vahdat & Jason Carter - Navai - Freemuse.org mp3 download - Freemuse.org ... A broadcast quality mp3 music track downloaded from Freemuse - the Music Freedom organisation (http://www.freemuse.org) who in 1998 established Mar 3rd as world Music Freedom Day in observance of musicians all around the globe who suffer from government suppression as in obvious places such as Iran and Pakistan, physical oppression from drug cartel murders of folk musicians in Mexico, or attempts to silence artists such as the Dixie Chicks here in the US. The emotional song 'Navai' was the Signature song for Music Freedom Day 2007 and features Iranian singer Marjan Vahdat in a musical collaboration with the British guitarist Jason Carter. They first met and performed together at a Freemuse conference. As a woman, Marjan Vahdat is highly restricted in performing in public in her home country, Iran. She met guitarist Jason Carter at the third Freemuse World Conference in Istanbul in November 2006, and they decided to meet again in Germany. In January 2007 they recorded 'Navai' in a room with a stereo pair of Neumann microphones plugged into Jason's Mac computer...
