Broadcasting in local languages allowed without time limit |
On 23 February 2010 The Radio and Television Higher Board (RTÜK) granted permission to 14 radio and tv stations in Turkey to broadcast in Kurdish, Zazaki, and Arabic without time limit. Previously, radio broadcasting in mother tongues had been limited to five hours per week, and four hours per week for tv stations, reported Antenna.tr
"This right means that everyone should be able to listen to music in their mother tongue freely, said Mahmut Saruhan, head of the radio station Cemre FM. His radio station has applied to RTÜK to broadcast in Kurdish in Mardin where the majority speak Kurdish.
The new regulation over-rules a previous decision in 2004 that limited broadcasting in mother tongues to one hour per day and five hours per week, and 45 minutes per day and four hours per week for tv stations. Live broadcasting was not possible due to lack of simultaneous translation. Translation was compulsory while teaching the language was not allowed.
Radio Ses in Mersin has declared that they will begin broadcasting in Kurdish, Zazaki and Arabic. Radio Net will broadcast in Kurdish, Zazaki, and Arabic. A TRT channel is now broadcasting in the Kurdish dialect Kirmançi 24 hours a day.
